How Many Days Until Halloween? 19 Days Left on Oct. 12
Nineteen days remain. That is two weeks and five days, or 14 weekdays, five weekend days and two Saturdays before Saturday, October 31.
Today is Columbus Day, observed in many places as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Federal offices, banks and the bond market are closed, which makes the streets quieter and the shops busier than a normal Monday.
Late October weather, and the one detail people forget
The last fortnight of October is a transition, and 2026 adds a wrinkle. Daylight saving time does not end until the morning of Sunday, November 1, so every evening until Halloween still runs on summer time. Sunset on October 31 will be later than it is a week afterward, and the usable light in the early evening is longer than the date suggests.
Regionally the pattern is predictable enough to plan around. The Northeast and Midwest see evenings in the forties and low fifties with a real chance of rain. The South is mild and sometimes warm. The West Coast has the smallest temperature spread but the earliest darkness relative to the clock, because coastal fog shortens the light.
Making a thin costume survivable
The most useful accessory in late October is a base layer. Long underwear, tights and a thermal shirt are invisible under almost any costume and turn a thin satin outfit into something a child can wear for three hours without complaining. Plan the base layer into the silhouette rather than treating it as an addition.
For rain, a clear poncho over a costume works better than an umbrella, which occupies a hand already holding a bag. Face paint cracks in cold, so a setting spray earns its small cost. And the coat goes over the costume rather than replacing it, which is the argument that resolves the same way in every household, every year.
The clock change, five days after Halloween
Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, at two in the morning, so the week after Halloween begins with a darker evening than the holiday had. Sunset moves about an hour earlier in a single step.
That shift catches anyone who judges a porch setup by how it looked on October 31. A display that read well at six in the evening on Halloween will be in full darkness at the same hour a week later, which matters to households planning to leave decorations up into November.
Nineteen days is long enough to buy a base layer and try the whole outfit on once, inside, with the shoes. That single fitting prevents most of what goes wrong on the night.
