How Many Days Until Halloween? 18 Days Left on Oct. 13
The month is past its midpoint, which means what is left to do involves a ladder and a plug. Halloween is 18 days away, on Saturday, October 31, leaving thirteen weekdays, five weekend days and two Saturdays.
With the month past its midpoint, the remaining tasks are the ones that involve a ladder and a plug, which is why they are also the ones most often done badly at the last minute.
Three light sources is the whole design
A porch reads well with three sources and starts looking cluttered with six. A porch light or wall fixture establishes the address. A lit pumpkin or two provides the warm point that carries from the street. One accent, such as a spotlight on a shrub, adds depth without noise.
Warm light is the better default in October. Bright white fixtures read as security lighting, and amber or orange makes a face look human instead of photographed. If you are buying anything this week, buy replacement bulbs rather than new fixtures, and keep every bulb the same color temperature so the porch reads as one scene rather than three.
The safety work that takes ten minutes
Clear the walking path in daylight. Extension cords should run overhead or behind a rail rather than across a step, and any cord that must cross a route should be taped down. Battery candles inside a pumpkin will not be knocked over by a costume and will not dry the shell from the inside.
Then check the steps themselves. Loose brick, a wobbly handrail and a burned-out porch bulb are the three most common causes of the fall that ends an evening early. Every one of them is a ten-minute repair, and every one of them is cheaper than an urgent care visit on the thirty-first.
Whether the display stays up into November
Every neighborhood has one house that keeps its decorations up until Thanksgiving, and it is worth deciding now whether that will be yours. The question is less about tradition than about weather and storage, since a display left outside through November gets rained on repeatedly.
The middle position most households settle on is a partial pack-down. Pumpkins and anything with a pumpkin motif come in on November 1, while generic autumn items such as leaves, straw, warm-toned lights and wreaths stay out for the month. Very little about a lit porch says Halloween specifically, which is why the porch light usually stays on all winter anyway.
Eighteen days allows for a test run of the whole setup while it is still daylight and still reversible.
