Thirty-one days separate today from Halloween. The holiday falls on Saturday, October 31, 2026, which is four weeks and three days out from a Wednesday.

Break the month down and the shape of the season becomes clearer. Twenty-two of the remaining days are weekdays and nine are weekend days, including Halloween itself. Four Saturdays come before the holiday, so there are four full weekends left to work with. If you plan nothing else, plan against those four weekends.

Candy in September is a mistake, but a small one

Chocolate keeps for months in a cool, dark cupboard, so buying early does no harm as long as the bag stays sealed. The problem is price. Seasonal candy promotions do not peak until the second half of October, when supermarkets start competing on multi-bags, and the full assortment is still on the shelf today.

The 2026 numbers argue for waiting a little. The Department of Agriculture forecasts sugar and sweets rising about 7.1 percent this year, against roughly 3.1 percent for food overall, with cocoa costs driving most of the increase. Chocolate has absorbed the worst of it. Fruit chews, gummies, lollipops and hard candy have not, which means a mixed bowl is now the cheaper bowl and not just the more varied one.

Buy in the middle of the month. Storage is easy if you keep the bags away from heat, and the reserve bag should stay closed until the night, because an open bag in a kitchen disappears long before October 31.

What the four weekends are for

The weekend of October 3 and 4 is the earliest useful one, and it belongs to decorations. Nothing that goes up now has to come down for a month, which is why displays put up this weekend tend to look better organized than the ones assembled in a rush later.

The weekend of October 24 and 25 is the last one before the holiday, and it has a job of its own. That is the carving weekend, because a carved pumpkin exposed to air starts to soften within about a week. Carve earlier than that and the pumpkin on the porch on Halloween is a sagging shell.

Between those two weekends sit October 10 and October 17. They are the party weekends, and they fill first. If a specific Saturday matters to you, the invitation should go out within the next ten days.

Thirty-one days is enough time to do this without hurrying, which is the only real advantage a month gives anyone. Use it on the things that cannot be fixed late.
