How Many Days Until Halloween? 28 Days Left on Oct. 3
Exactly four weeks from today is Halloween. That is 28 days, or 20 weekdays, eight weekend days and three Saturdays before the holiday on Saturday, October 31.
Four weeks is the point on the calendar when a party invitation stops feeling early. It is also the last point at which a host has a real choice about which weekend to use.
There are only three usable weekends
October 10 and 11, October 17 and 18, and the holiday weekend of October 24 through 31. Saturday nights go first, and the Saturday closest to Halloween is the hardest one to book a venue for. Anyone planning a party in the final stretch should send the invitation this week, not next.
The alternative worth considering is holding it on the holiday itself. Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, so a party on October 31 has no school the next morning and no workday to compete with. The tradeoff is that it runs against trick-or-treating in the same hours, which pushes the realistic start time to eight in the evening.
What to settle before the invitation goes out
Three decisions change the guest list, so make them first. Whether costumes are required, encouraged or optional. Whether children are invited, since a family party and an adult party draw different crowds at different hours. And whether the event is a dinner, a drinks party or an open house with a start and end time.
Of those, the costume question disturbs people most. A party described as costumes optional gets a higher acceptance rate than one that reads as a costume requirement, and the guests who do dress up usually arrive in better costumes when they are not being graded. Couples themes are the format to avoid, because they force a joint decision on every invitation.
What a party actually costs
Cost per guest is the number that matters, and it is usually higher than hosts expect. Food and drink run between about 12 and 20 per person at a modest house party, and that figure climbs once a theme is involved.
The way to control it is to pick two categories and do them well rather than five and do them adequately. A good punch, a pot of soup and one dessert people remember costs about what a table of snacks costs and takes less time to clean up. Decorations are where parties lose money, because most of it is bought for a single evening and stored for eleven months.
