How Many Days Until Halloween? 26 Days Left on Oct. 5

Parents are working to a shorter deadline than the neighborhood is. Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31, which is 26 days out, but classroom events land in the final week of October and need everything ready a day early. Nineteen of the remaining days are weekdays and seven are weekend days.

Parents should plan for a shorter deadline than that. Most classroom Halloween events are held on the nearest school day rather than on the holiday, which in 2026 means Thursday, October 29 or Friday, October 30. Everything a child needs for school has to be ready a day before the neighborhood does anything.

The questions to ask this week

Five weeks of notice is enough to get real answers instead of assumptions. Does the classroom allow costumes, and are masks or props excluded. Are food treats permitted, and must they be store-bought and sealed. Does the class have a child with a food allergy, and does the school prefer non-food items. Is there a class party with a sign-up sheet, and which slots are still open.

The allergy question deserves to be asked directly rather than inferred. Roughly one in thirteen children has a food allergy, so a class of twenty-six statistically contains about two. A teacher who knows the answer will tell you, and the answer changes what is useful to bring.

Treats that pass every set of rules

Individually wrapped non-food items are the safest contribution in almost every school. Pencils, stickers, temporary tattoos, glow sticks, small notebooks and erasers cost about what a fun-size candy bar costs, and they do not melt in a backpack or create a sugar rush before lunch. For food, sealed packaging with a visible ingredient list is the standard.

If the class runs a sign-up sheet, claim a slot now rather than on Thursday morning. The slots that go unclaimed are always the same ones, and they tend to be the ones that actually matter.

Another option is the classroom version of trunk-or-treat, where a school asks families to decorate car trunks in a parking lot. It exists for the same reason church Halloween events do: it moves the evening into a controlled space with a fixed start and finish.

Costumes need two versions

A costume worn in a bright classroom at ten in the morning is a different design problem from one worn on a dark sidewalk at seven at night. Classmates see the first version and only a few adults see the second. If a costume has to be simplified, the version that sits down, walks through a hallway and survives a lunch period is the one worth building.
