How Many Days Until Halloween? 16 Days Left on Oct. 15
Halloween is 16 days away, on Saturday, October 31, which leaves eleven weekdays, five weekend days and two Saturdays.
The cheapest thing left on the list is also the one that shapes the evening most, and it does not cost anything.
The rule that runs the whole night
A lit porch means you are participating. A dark porch means skip the house. Almost every problem on Halloween traces back to that convention being unclear in one direction or the other. Households with an automatic porch light get visitors all evening whether they intended it or not. Households that leave the light off while sitting in the front room wonder why nobody knocked.
If the light is on a timer, either accept the visitors or switch it off deliberately for the evening. If you are participating but going out, a bowl on the step works for about an hour and no longer. If you are not participating, a closed door is a complete answer and nobody requires an explanation.
Two other conventions catch out anyone new to a neighborhood. A house with decorations up but no porch light is usually out for the evening rather than refusing visitors, and a bowl on the step signals one item rather than a handful. Households that leave a bowl out and then watch from a window are the only ones who tend to be disappointed by the result.
For anyone hosting, the courtesy that costs nothing is being visible. A person who answers the door, says something about the costume and closes it again gives every child the same thirty seconds, and thirty seconds is what the evening is made of.
Courtesies on both sides of the door
Put the bowl somewhere reachable without climbing blind steps, and keep the path lit rather than decorative. A dog that barks at every visitor is happier in a back room with the radio on than at the front door.
For families walking the block, two habits cover most of it. Say thank you at the door rather than turning away, and take one item per child unless the household offers more.
Anyone driving during those hours should treat residential streets as pedestrian space. Between six and eight in the evening the roads that are usually empty fill with small people in dark costumes, and the near misses that get reported every year happen at driveways and corners. Drive at walking speed, and put the window down before the turn.
