How Many Days Until Halloween? 13 Days Left on Oct. 18
Friday, October 30 is the date every workplace is aiming at, and it is now twelve working days away. Halloween itself is 13 days out, on Saturday, October 31, which leaves ten weekdays and three weekend days in between.
That gap matters. The office event happens four days before the holiday, so anything ordered for it has to arrive earlier than anything ordered for the night itself.
The announcement deadline has arrived
Two weeks of lead time is what makes an office event feel organized rather than improvised, and two weeks from today is November 1. The announcement needs to go out this week, and whatever is being ordered needs to be ordered at the same time.
The failure mode is familiar. A costume contest announced in the final week draws a handful of participants and a slightly awkward room. A food order placed on October 28 gets whatever the supplier has left, which in late October is not much.
What makes the event work for everyone
Not everybody wants to dress up, and an event that implies they should will be resented by exactly the people who make an office pleasant to work in. Say in writing that participation is optional, and make the categories broad enough that ordinary clothes can compete.
Judging should be a fixed time rather than an open block, with three or four specific categories instead of one grand prize. A category that rewards something absurd tends to pull in more people than a category that rewards effort.
Food is easier when it is narrow. Pick one thing and provide it rather than running an open potluck, which produces six desserts and no lunch. Ask about allergies rather than assuming, and label anything homemade.
The thing to avoid
Making attendance feel mandatory is how office events turn into grievances. A costume contest that everyone is expected to enter stops being fun for the people who did not want to enter it, and the resentment lasts longer than the event does.
The fix is structural rather than diplomatic. Category prizes instead of one winner, entry by choice rather than by default, and a plain line stating that coming as yourself counts as an entry. Offices that get this right report higher participation, not lower.
Thirteen days leaves room to plan this properly and no room to discover a problem late. The people who enjoy the event most are usually the ones who heard about it before the week it happened.
