How Many Days Until Halloween? 11 Days Left on Oct. 20
Eleven days out, and the party question has stopped being planning and started being arithmetic. There are 11 days until Saturday, October 31, with eight weekdays, three weekend days and one Saturday in between.
The shipping line has been crossed
Today is the practical last day for standard shipping on most online orders. Next week belongs to expedited service, which costs more than most of what it carries, and the final two days belong to overnight delivery or to whatever is on a shelf nearby.
Delivery estimates count business days rather than calendar days, which is where most late orders go wrong. A three-to-five business day estimate quoted today lands between October 23 and October 27 and is safe. The same estimate quoted on October 26 lands in early November and is not.
For guests, the information that matters is not the theme but the logistics. Whether there is parking on the street, whether the party is indoors or in a yard, and whether there is food or only drinks. Those three lines prevent most of the phone calls a host receives on the day.
If the party falls on Halloween itself, two adjustments matter. Trick-or-treating runs from about six to eight in the evening, so a start time before eight puts guests in traffic with small pedestrians. And anyone with children will arrive late or not at all, which is arithmetic rather than rudeness.
Catering quantities are easier than they look. About one pound of food per guest for a full meal, roughly half that for appetizers, and one drink per person per hour with a non-alcoholic option for about a third of the room. A host who buys to those numbers usually ends up with leftovers rather than a shortage, which is the direction to err in.
For anything still unbought, the store is now faster than any carrier. Face paint, batteries, glow sticks, tape and extra candy should be picked up in person.
Party numbers, and the food problem
With eleven days left, the guest list is the only variable that still matters. A host who knows the number can buy food, plan seating and set a start time. A host who does not will spend the final week chasing replies.
Set a reply date rather than asking for a reply. Guests respond to deadlines and ignore requests. For food, narrow the brief. A potluck described as bring something produces six desserts, and a sign-up sheet with named categories fills faster than an open one.
If the party is on Halloween itself, remember that it competes with trick-or-treating in the same three hours. An eight o’clock start is more realistic than a six o’clock one.
